The paper examines the idea of cryptocurrencies and its sustainability in the digital economy. The specifics of mining are examined from several points of view: in terms of technical requirements, economic theory and current costs. The impact of cryptocurrency mining on the economy and environment is described. Several solutions to the problem of mining are presented, including smart electricity monitoring powered by internet of things (IoT) and smart energy grids, GIS-powered heat monitoring, and integration of cryptotoken mining into smart city infrastructure -- repurposing waste heat and associating actual municipal utility with the mined tokens.
